Insulation Blowers

Shop and learn about the insulation blower here:

An insulation blower is used to blow the air in and out during installation of certain insulation methods, like cellulose insulation. An insulation blower is highly efficient, relatively inexpensive and easy to install. When you buy a minimum quantity of insulation from places that sell loose-fill insulation, chances are that they will lend you an insulation blower for the weekend.

Installing an Insulation Blower

Insulation blowers are not that hard to install. Probably the only difficult part will be determining where to drill access holes in the walls where you intend to blow the insulation in. You need to figure out first which surface will be the easiest to repair after the insulation blowing process is finished. If your siding can be removed and replaced easily then you can just remove a row of them and blow in the insulation from outside the house. If not, you will need to blow in the insulation from inside, through drilled holes near the ceiling of each level of your house.

Precautions and Common Mistakes

Make sure to avoid wiring and plumbing when drilling into walls. Wiring usually runs parallel to and about 10 to 20 inches above the floor, while plumbing can be found in bathroom and kitchen walls. It is also recommended not to use blown-in insulation near chimneys and other heat producing objects. Don't forget to use baffles when insulating attics, as these will keep the insulation from blocking airflow along the roof sheeting.

Some Helpful Tips

It is always a good idea to understand how to properly use the insulation blower before leaving the store with it. Usually where insulation is involved, a vapor barrier is required to prevent mildew and paint from peeling on the interior walls. Blown-in insulation does not provide this kind of barrier, but most of the time this does not create problems; just use an interior paint with moisture protection properties if you notice paint problems afterwards. Also, in order to prevent excess dust inside your house, leave the blower machine outside and run the hose through a door or window. Following these basic tips will help you to install an insulation blower more efficiently.
